Saravana Kumar graduated in Civil Engineering from the Government College of Technology, Coimbatore, India in 1990 and M.Tech (Hydraulic & Water Resources Engineering) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 1992. He joined the Isotope Division of Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC), a premier multi-disciplinary R&D centre based at Mumbai under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. He joined BARC, after successfully completing the Orientation Course for Engineering Post-graduates (1st Batch) at the BARC Training School. Subsequently, he obtained his Ph.D (Water Resources) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 2001.

During 2011 to February 2014, served as Scientist ‘G’ and Head, Isotope Hydrology Section of BARC. Also, he was a faculty of the Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai and a recognized Ph. D (Civil Engineering) Guide of the University of Mumbai. After serving in BARC for almost 22 years, took voluntary retirement from service from BARC and joined the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), Safat, Kuwait and since then working as a senior researcher.

His field of expertise is isotope hydrology with special emphasis on water resources management. He has obtained a few advanced training in the field of isotope hydrology in abroad (Australia, Austria, Malaysia). He has served as the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Technical Co-operation expert in his field in a few countries in the region and outside (Thailand, Vietnam, Kuwait, Dubai, Jordon). He has over 80 publications in various international and national journals and in conference proceedings to his credit.

During March 2014 to December 04, 2017, worked as a Research Scientist at the Water Research Center of Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), Safat, Kuwait. At KISR, was involved in a few client funded projects on groundwater resources management of Kuwait.

Since December 11, 2017 works for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna, Austria as the isotope hydrologist to carry out research as well provide scientific advice and guidance to the various technical co-operation activities of IAEA in its member states. Presently, as the senior isotope hydrologist (P4, step 6) looks after 4 Coordinated Research Projects involving several MSS all over the world, 6 individual research and technical contracts funded through regular and extra-budgetary contributions and over 20 Technical Cooperation Projects (in about 50 MSs in the Asia and Pacific and Africa Regions). He also coordinates Collaborating Centre activities with 2 MSs institutions in Vietnam and Thailand and isotope monitoring networks in several MSs in Asia and Pacific and Africa regions for applications of isotope techniques for hydrological and climatological studies.
